Cricket: Australian Cricket 2012-2013: team in focus: NSW Speedblitz Blues

Bupa Sheffield Shield: 5th

Ryobi One-Day Cup: 3rd

The Blues have some impressive players on their squad list: Michael Clarke, Mitchell Starc, Brad Haddin, Doug Bollinger.  Unfortunately, these are also Australian contracted players.  However, the likes of wily medium pacer Trent Copeland, speedster Patrick Cummins, and wicketekeeper/batsman Peter Nevill, there is a lot to like about this young squad.

With their last triumph coming in the 2007-2008 Sheffield Shield competition, the Blues will be looking to their youngsters to gain experience.  Josh Hazelwood showed real potential in 2011-2012, breaking into the regular squad, taking 30 wickets in ten first class matches.  Copeland, now 26, is built like Glenn McGrath, but bowls in the 120’s.  With Starc and Cummins on Cricket Australia’s contract list, it will be up to Hazelwood and Copeland to help lead a young attack, with five rookie bowlers listed.

At only 20, left-hand opener Nic Maddinson has a lot riding on his shoulders.  With Michael Clarke and David Warner away with the Aussies, the opener has two first class centuries in 14 matches at an average of just under 35.  With new players to the squad, Maddinson will have to rely on partner Ben Rohrer and all-rounders Moses Henriques, Steven Smith and captain Steve O’Keefe to cement a batting line-up.

On wicketkeepers, Peter Nevill is the number 1 wicketkeeper, with Brad Haddin on international duties.  After a consistent season in ’11-’12, Nevill should be looking to use last season as a stepping stone in scoring more runs and improving his wicketkeeping.
