Bayswater secured a top four spot against the promoted Wantirna South Devils at home leading into the Queen’s Birthday weekend bye, taking home the four points with a 16.10.106 to 8.6.54 win.

Much of the scoring was thanks to Bayswater’s power forward Wayne McInerney (six majors), but the credit went to the delivery across the ground, with more than 60 tackles laid. Continue reading EFL: Pressure and structure key for Bayswater win over Wantirna South

When the competition was a fledgling hatched from the egg, now all the way back in the 2011-2012 season, the criticism that a city-based team tournament wouldn’t work came from every which way.  Geoff Hutchison, writing for ABC show The Drum a little over three years ago, wrote that “At the Big Bash, anything goes.  Everything is great; but the cricket was secondary to everything else.”

Everything about it has gone upwards and onwards – not to stardom, but to a level where the fans are breaking ground crowd records, and the overseas imports have been stepped up a level. Cricket: Why Australia v Pakistan is nothing more than a “warm-up”

The entire series feels as though it is squeezed somewhere in between the start of the Australian season and the wrapping up of the Champions League Twenty20, just to keep the fans engaged.

Of course, this is not the case, and it is proving to be beneficial for a few of the Australian players.  Steve Smith registered his first one-day international century with some superb shots in the first of three matches in the series. The battle at the MCG on Saturday night between Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions, in some aspects, is a game-changer.

On the back of a 105 point belting at the hands of the Adelaide Crows, the young Lions brigade received a rude shock.  They cannot make finals, but they can ruffle the Magpies feathers if they bring an A-Game performance. Continue reading AFL: How Brisbane need to set themselves for the future

Once again, the city of Wodonga greeted competitors with a slight chill, but no sign of rain.

With all sports beginning to hit the peak stage of their respective divisions, securing as many wins as possible became crucial in the race for a top spot. Continue reading Southern University Games: Day 2: Tossing balls and Frisbees with Netball, Touch, Tennis and Ultimate

Let’s start off with a figure, and that figure is 714.  That’s the number of sixes hit across edition seven of the Indian Premier League, and 60 matches.

This tournament provided one of the greatest spectacles in the history of Twenty20 cricket.  From game one between the Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders, the stage was set. Continue reading Cricket: IPL over, but entertainment galore

AFL: 1-5 for the Lions in rebuilding stage

It has been a while since I took some sort of “point out a problem” stand on Beyond Realisation.  This time around, the target is the Brisbane Lions.

However, rather than call the Lions a target, it is instead a topic that got me very excited on ANZAC Day.  The Lions mustered their first win – albeit a very, very nervous one – by three points against a determined St. Kilda outfit in Wellington. Australian Twenty20 captain George Bailey had big shoes to fill, after the national side won an astonishing 12 of 13 games against England during the recent summer.

Travelling to Bangladesh red hot on form, things took a turn the moment Pakistan wielded the willow in their first group game in Mirpur. Continue reading Cricket: World Twenty20: Did Australia blow expectations in Bangladesh?

For the 24 hours prior to Saturday, March 15th, weather forecasts were very closely monitored.

It was a day of firsts for the Box Hill Reporter District Cricket Association to start the Grand Final weekend.  Not only were the patrons at the ground witness to a high quality game, but so were people at home or on mobile, courtesy of a live streaming service. AFL: Leppitsch at the Lions helm is a positive for 2014

(from the mouth of a Lions fan)

In sport, experience matters when it comes to leading a list of players.  Each AFL team has around 40 of them; that’s a handful.

For the Brisbane Lions, a new approach with Justin Leppitsch may just be the kickstart needed after two years on the fringe, coupled with some disappointing results. Continue reading AFL: Leppitsch at the Lions helm is a positive for 2014
